Cultivation novels are often set in ancient china or similar places with cities that follow the trend of such times. I think I may have read too many of them that they have started to lose their appeal to me. That’s why when I found some cultivation novels that are set in an urban city – something extremely familiar to most of us – I was delighted. You see, a simple twist is often enough to break the monotony.
Cultivation Chat Group (CN)
In modern society, martial cultivators have been a myth or a legend; something staple to web novels. Song Shuhang thought so as well when he was accidentally added to a chat group for cultivators called Nine Provinces Group. While he was lurking around the chat of the people he thought were just chuunibyus, he sees a recipe about body tempering posted by one of the usually quiet members. He tries it for himself out of concern for the well-being of the group members who might try to make the concoction and finds out that the medicine was nothing short of magical.

The old man who raised him, and taught him his trade died a year ago thus leaving him alone with only Small Black, a conscious flying sword, as his company. On his way home, a remnant soul entered his body and caused him to dream about the life of a powerful titan from 40,000 years ago; when he woke up, he realized that among other things, he now has the memories of a powerhouse.

Everyone who reads web novels must have read at least a few reincarnation or time travel stories. Fang Ping is one of them… of us. So when he realized that he had reincarnated back to a younger version of himself, he was elated. Now, he can use his knowledge of the future to be a protagonist of his era, but such happiness was short-lived as soon as he found out that this world that he lives in is anything but the Earth he knew.

As he slowly wades into the mortal’s struggle for immortality, the waters get murkier and so does the human heart.

This man called out to him, and his words snapped Li Yiming back to his senses. Then, the man spoke to him to great lengths about the society’s rules and the Dao; and finally asked him a question, “Do you want to be someone who makes the rules?”, before vanishing into thin air. Little did he know, after that day he will learn that this world isn’t that far from fantasy.

Nonetheless, he realized that there’s more to his illness than meets the eye.

When a major murder case happened, he took it on by himself knowing that it’ll likely involve demons. His parents were killed by a demon, and he has been searching far and wide for this demon to exact his vengeance.

Usually, people in their 20s would have some sort of ambition to better their lives, but Yang Chen was satisfied with his life selling mutton skewers in his stall despite his elite background. One night, after all the years of abstinence, he was forced to drink alcohol which effectively loosened some of his restraints. Wanting to indulge himself, he saw an alluring woman who ended up spending a night with him. The next day, he was arrested by the police for beating up some gangsters and was bailed out by the person he just had a passionate night with. The woman turned out to be the CEO of a huge company, and she wanted Yang Chen to marry her.
